I have been running through the common problems and applying them, but it seems to be causing even less of my design elements work in IE 8.
The correct format shows in all other browsers, the incorrect format in IE 8.

I'm having trouble seeing why the layout is getting what looks like extra horizontal margins. I do notice that you're not using html5shiv to add support for styling of HTML5 elements like <nav>, which could very well be messing with your layout. If you add html5shiv, does it help?
