Post subject:  Applying PIE to an element in a slider

I've been pulling my hair out on this one. I have a button class styled with a linear gradient and rounded corners. This works fine in normal page content. However, this should also be used for a "read more" link in a slider caption. I'm using Flexslider. In IE9 this doesn't work at all, the background stays the default color. In IE8, it works correctly in the first slide. In the subsequent ones, it only works on reloading the page and even the standard background is not displayed.

I guess the problem is that the subsequent slides are hidden at first and the element in question is nested at a deeper level so PIE does not detect the change even with -pie-watch-ancestors. The code structure is:

  <div class="caption">
    <div class="caption-wrap">
     <a class="button">

I tried forcing a resize event on each slide via Flexslider's after callback and $('a.button').resize() to no avail.

Any ideas?
