Yeah, maybe it is a separate issue. The change you linked to is the one that put in the code that is now going wrong. We get "unspecified error" on line 94 char 107 -- the start of the body of cleanup().

The person in charge of the deployment where the issue came up has just put in Ampaze's patch and apparently decided that it's good enough as a fix to go forward with.
