Wow, you weren't kidding! Thanks very much for the test case. I've opened ticket http://github.com/lojjic/PIE/issues/#issue/40 to track this.

FYI, IE7 is fine. Also, the crash in IE8 only seems to happen with Prototype 1.6.1 (1.6.0.x are fine). Searching around it seems many other people are having IE8 crashes with Prototype 1.6.1, so this doesn't seem like a PIE-specific issue. I'm opening this ticket to keep record of it anyway. It's possible there's a workaround to avoid the offending Prototype code.

I wanted to confirm that this is a bug. I posted on StackOverflow in the hopes of getting some help.

I'm using version 1.7_rc2 but IE8 crashes, my only solution is the meta compatibility mode

Unfortunately, or fortunately, the problem comes from our beloved framework Prototype.
In fact I also tried this other technique (http://www.fetchak.com/ie-css3/) always based on a htc file, but when I include prototype.js IE8 crashes ...
